Buy yourself an upcoming 2011 Chrysler Jeep Grand Cherokee and you’ll automatically net yourself an in-dash Garmin GPS navigation system. The OEM partnership is Garmin’s first resulting in a factory install and is likely the first in many partnerships we’ll see in the future. Especially as portable GPS devices begin to lose market share to GPS-enabled smartphones.
The in-dash Garmin device will have the same easy-to-use interface as its popular nuvi PNDs, albeit with a larger 6.5-inch touchscreen and full integration with Chrysler’s Uconnect radio. There will also be many other features common to nuvi GPS devices including NAVTEQ maps of North America including 6 million points of interest, frequent map updates, lane assist and junction views, voice-guided turn-by-turn directions, current speed display and speed limits, customized vehicle icons, and Garmin’s Where Am I? feature that displays your current coordinates and nearby gas stations, restaurants and other POIs.
