Another iPhone coming? Evidence can be found in the latest firmware

Apple’s iPhone updates, no matter how seemingly insignificant they may be, always reveal something interesting.  MacRumors has discovered evidence in yesterday’s firmware update that a new iPhone model may be on the way.

The hardware designation “iPhone 2,1″ can be found in the USBDeviceConfiguration.plist file.  These numbers refer to hardware functionality rather than software updates.  For instance, the first iPhone was iPhone 1,1 while the 3G iPhone is iPhone 1,2.  The same numbers apply to the iPod Touch.

The evidence doesn’t seem to refer to a lower-end iPhone line, which has been rumored under the guise of iPhone nano lately.  Apple has firmly denied anything like that is in the works.  Basically for the same reason the company says it won’t produce a netbook–Apple doesn’t make cheap products.

Other rumors have been flowing that the next-generation iPhone–regular iPhone we’re talking about now–will use multi-core processors, and possibly multi-core GPU’s from Imagination Technologies.  Apple recently invested in Imagination and holds a significant stake in the company.

One thing is for sure.  Apple has a tendency to roll out new mobile products in June or July, so if something new is on the way that is when it will emerge.
