Location-based applications are old hat now, but I don’t think I’ve ever heard anyone mention the concept of a location-based app store before. John Geraci’s community project DIYCity is making the concept a reality with plans to relaunch DIYCity as Appify.com in January 2010.
Appify will sort mobile applications by location so if, for instance, I want to find an app specific in content to Winnipeg, I can find it and others like it under the Winnipeg category. It’s an interesting concept and definitely a useful one. None of the app stores around today make it simple to organize local apps like this, ultimately making them tough to find.
Appify will sort apps in a platform agnostic way as well, so it won’t matter if you or I have an iPhone, Blackberry, Android phone or some other OS-powered cellphone. All the Winnipeg apps will still be found under the one location-oriented category. In the spirit of community, which is so important to DIYCity, users will also be able to vote up their favorite apps and even suggest apps they’d like to see built. I’m looking forward to a beta launch in January!
