Likely in response to widespread discussion regarding the iTune’s app store design and pricing and how it negatively affects developers, Apple has changed the store’s design overnight. Rather than just have a top 10 list of free and paid apps, Apple now has a top 10 list for each category which should help calm the uproar a bit.
Everything started when developer Craig Hockenberry published an open letter to Steve Jobs regarding the proliferation of $0.99 ‘ringtone apps’ and how they were negatively affecting his business IconFactory. The letter has spurred on all kinds of debate in the blogosphere that’s become rather polarized–some siding with Hockenberry and others pointing out that marketing an app lies with the developer rather than Apple.
I’m torn because while I agree marketing is not Apple’s responsibility, the way the app store runs–specifically from a pricing point of view–doesn’t exactly scream free market. But it’s good to see that Apple has obviously taken the discussion into consideration and continues to improve the app store.
Does anyone think Hockenberry will publish an open thank you letter?
