Asus Eee phone becomes Garmin-Asus Eee phone but won’t be in Barcelona

The ASUS Eee phone which we were hoping would be debuted at Mobile World Congress won’t be, according to PC World.  In fact, the publication cites an Asustek spokesperson as saying the first Eee phone will be a co-branded Garmin-Asus low-cost smartphone that’ll be announced later this year.

Garmin-Asus is the recent partnership that has resulted in the nuviphone G60 and nuviphone M20, which will be on the showfloor at MWC.

The Asus rep didn’t mention whether the Garmin-Asus Eee phone would run on Google’s Android operating system as is currently rumored.  Both Garmin and Asus are members of the Android-supporting Open Handset Alliance so it’s likely, but as a co-branded phone it is also likely the Eee phone will have navigational capabilities surpassing those of most lower-end smartphones.

I’ll keep you updated as I find out more.
