Just when we get wind of an ASUS S121 netbook based on the earlier S101, ASUS pulls another fast one with an impending S101 variant. Model name S101H, the new netbook will opt for a hard disk drive instead of a solid-state drive. Due to rules imposed by Microsoft with XP licensing the S101 only features a 16 GB SSD, so with the hard disk option the S101H offers users should have access to much more memory. The one possible downside though is the result of the thin S101H chassis. Because of the lack of room for a 2.5-inch drive, ASUS will likely only be able to fit a slower 1.8-inch drive into the new netbook.
Most of the other S101 features are expected to carry over including 30 GB of online storage, 1 GB of RAM, an 802.11n Wi-Fi module, Bluetooth 2.0 and a multi-card reader. With the cheaper hard disk drive the S101H should also be cheaper than the $699 price tag that comes along with the SSD-packin’ S101. No word on availability at the time of this writing.
