If you have any of the latest model Blackberry’s, including the 8830, 8130 Pearl and 8330 Curve, and are a Bell Canada subscriber then we have some bad news just for you.
An internal memo leaked from Bell apparently shows that Blackberry users who use mapping services other than Bell’s, such as Google Maps or even Blackberry Maps, will notice a marked decrease in GPS performance in the very near future.
The memo apparently states that those that use mapping services other than Bell’s will find their Blackberry’s time to first fix increase from 15-20 seconds to 2-10 minutes. AND current speculation also says that the usual 10-25 meter accuracy will deteriorate to a pretty pathetic 1-2.5 kilometer range. Effectively rendering your Blackberry’s navigational functionality absolutely useless.
If you’re not pissed enough to ditch Bell by now, there is some ‘good’ news. If you’re willing to pay upwards of $10 per month for Bell’s GPS Nav mapping service, your GPS will remain quite effective. Looks like Bell hasn’t quite embraced the ‘open’ philosophy as of yet.
