Bionic Eye augmented reality app for iPhone 3GS

The augmented reality application, “Nearest Subway,” has been renamed Bionic Eye and is for sale in the iTunes App Store for $0.99.

Designed only for the iPhone 3GS, Bionic Eye overlays points of interest over real-world imagery as viewed through the phone’s camera viewfinder. In addition to the pubic transit information Bionic Eye has provided from the get-go, it now provides directional information to Wi-Fi hotspots, fast food restaurants, chain hotels, and even Apple stores.

Separate versions of Bionic Eye are available for the United States, United Kingdom, France and Tokyo.

The great thing about the app is that it doesn’t need a 3G or Wi-Fi network to be used. Its sizable 2.9 Megabyte size is plenty large enough to store over 10, 000 POIs. The only downside is that the subway information has to be purchased within the application and is restricted to New York, Washington and Chicago.
