A new requirement from the California Air Resources Board requires auto manufacturers to include an advanced window glazing to keep cars cooler. The thinking behind the move is that cooler cars equal less air conditioning usage, meaning less fuel usage and related chemicals being leaked into the atmosphere. The problem with the window coating is that it interferes with signals from the likes of GPS satellites and mobile phones. While the new regulation isn’t expected to take full effect until 2012, PND maker Garmin is worried that the effects of the metal oxide coating haven’t been thoroughly studied. The company also said initial testing revealed that GPS signals were degraded.
