callaway upro golf gps Callaway uPro golf GPS reviewed: better than the Garmin Approach G5, currently $100 off

Most GPS-lovin’ golfers are probably aware of Garmin’s Approach G5, but what about the Callaway uPro?  Yep, it’s that Callaway, the same company that manufactures golf clubs.  According to PCMag, the Callaway uPro is actually a step-up from the G5.  Some of its features include:

  • 4 x 2 x 0.65 inch dimensions
  • 3.2 ounces with the rechargeable battery (good for 10-12 hours)
  • 2.2 inch display with 320 x 240 pixels (not touch sensitive)
  • 4 directional arrows, a central button, and 2 soft keys below the display used for navigation
  • no preloaded golf course maps; you download them yourself from the uPro site from a selection of 15, 000 in the United States and elsewhere and store them on the included microSD card
  • maximum storage is 50 courses; easy to add and remove via the uPro site interface
  • has 2 modes: Basic and Pro (Basic is similar to the information offered on the Approach G5 while the Pro mode includes video flyovers of each hole based on satellite imagery, customized SmartView of the greens and hazards, and AnyPoint lets you measure distances)
  • Pro mode costs: $10 for a single course, $40 for 5 courses, or $180 for 120 courses (works out to $1.20 per course)

The Pro mode is one area where the Callaway uPro pulls ahead of the Garmin Approach G5.  It also has a meter so you can see how much battery life you have at all times.  On the downside it has no score keeper like the Approach.  If you opt for the Callaway uPro you better love your golf game: it lists for $399.99 (or $299.99 until July 31, 2009 with this $100 mail-in rebate!).

I just got a uPro. It is OK, no more, no less. Very hard to get to sync with either a PC or a Mac without calling Callaway customer service (I have spent several hours with them. They are very nice, unlike Sky Caddie's people , but still, the unit is not so user friendly.) I used the unit one time on the golf course and it worked fine in basic mode, less fine in pro mode. Some of the switches did NOT work as they were supposed to work. I have a sky caddie, a golflogix, and this. the sky caddie is still the best, altho the uPro is much smaller and nearly as accurate (the golflogix is not nearly as accurate.) Overall, it's overpriced and I would still go with the best sky caddie, but frankly, I am done with these.

This is a nice unit and easy to use but don't buy it until you are sure your home course is available. I was promised by the manufacturer that they would publish my course within a couple of weeks of me requesting the unit, that was over a month ago. According to the UPRO web page, this course has been requested 37 times and they have still not published it. Since I play 90% of my golf at my home course, the unit is essentially useless!!
