While privacy advocates in the United States fight warrantless GPS tracking, European groups fight Google StreetView, and one Ottawa Citizen reporter compares Google to an unforgiving God, the lack of proper cellphone tracking amongst Canadian wireless carriers is causing sick Canadians to drop like flies.
The Canadian Wireless Telecommunications Association is giving wireless providers until February 2010 to get proper positioning technology in place that will allow 911 dispatchers to pinpoint the location of a cellular call in an emergency. More than half of Canadian 911 calls are made from cellular phones currently and a number of Canadians have died because their calls couldn’t be located.
Makes you a little less concerned about privacy, doesn’t it?
