Navizon Gets US Patent For First Positioning System Combining GPS, WiFi, Cellular Tech
Mexens Technology, the inventor of the Navizon Positioning System, has received a patent from the US Patent and Trademark Office for its “System and Method for Enabling Continuous Geographic Location Estimation for Wireless Computing Devices” (US Patent No. 7397424). This is major for the company, which was founded in early 2005, and in July of that year released Navizon. Navizon was the first positioning system to combine GPS, WiFi, and cellular technologies in order to determine super-accurate location information, and relies on a crowdsourced database put together by its global army of 700, 000 users of which 60, 000 are current spread across 60 countries.

Microsoft Goes After PND Market With Windows Embedded NavReady 2009

Microsoft has developed Windows Embedded NavReady 2009, a PND operating platform, according to a press release from yesterday. Built specifically for OEM’s building out feature-rich PND’s, the NavReady operating system allows manufacturers to bring PND’s with internet connectivity, mobile phones with Bluetooth, and other connected devices to market quickly and easily. Based on Windows Embedded CE, NavReady 2009 features include:
Live Search–internet-based Live Search for finding local POIs
Bluetooth technologies–Hands Free, Pairing Service, Phone Book Access, Advanced Audio Distribution, Audio and Video Remote Control, Dial Up Networking and Bluetooth Connection Manager. PND’s can be used to make hands-free phone calls when paired with a Bluetooth mobile phone.
MSN Direct–for providing up-to-date traffic alerts and fuel prices
Windows SideShow–allows the PND to be used as a secondary display for a Vista-based PC, and allows Sideshow gadgets to exchange info between the two

Tutorial: How To Geotag Photos
These days when you take a picture with your digital camera, the camera applies some information to each photo such as the time it was taken, etc, etc. A few cameras are hitting the market now that also add location-based info to photos via GPS, but for many of us the only way to add location data to our pics is through geotagging. The ways of doing this are becoming endless, whether they be through GPS data loggers, SD cards or computer software. Wired Mag’s website has an excellent tutorial covering the ins and outs of geotagging photos which all of you aspiring photographers out there should definitely check out.
