Nokia’s 8208 GPS-Equipped Dual-Slider Phone Headed For China
Nokia’s 8208 dual-sliding and GPS-equipped mobile phone, looking to be destined for the Chinese market as the Nokia 8208c, seems to be a ripoff of Nokia’s popular N95 and coming N96 models. One big difference is that the Nokia 8208 3G mobile runs on CDMA-based EVDO RevA networks like those from Verizon and Sprint in the United States. Interestingly Nokia’s specs list the 8208’s GPS service as using a hybrid GPS receiver for China Unicom and a standalone receiver for other countries. So if you can get your hands on one, it should work in the US.
Some of the Nokia 8208’s other features include:
- 2.2-inch QVGA 240 x 320 pixel screen
- Nokia Series 40 spec user interface
- SMS, LMS, MMS, smart messaging, email
- FM radio, music player with dedicated co-processor and 20 hours of continuous playback and external music control keys
- 150 MB of internal memory, up to 8 GB on microSD card
- Bluetooth 2.0 + EDR
- MicroUSB 2.0
- Brew 3.1.5 browsing
- 3.0 megapixel camera with flash and 6x digital zoom
- Dictionary for China Unicom
- Average 4 hour talk time, 11 day standby time
No word right now on pricing details or expected availability dates and locations.

Nokia Gets Approval To Purchase NAVTEQ, Looks To Battle Google
Look for Nokia’s planned purchase of NAVTEQ to officially go through in the next week or so after the $8.1 billion deal received unconditional approval from the European Commission yesterday. This in itself isn’t so interesting, but with Google signing a 5 year deal with TomTom’s recent acquisition TeleAtlas last week granting full access to the company’s mapping data, Google’s Android and the Open Handset Alliance will look to be pitted directly against Nokia and its Symbian Foundation come later this year.

Update Your Nokia N810 Internet Tablet To AGPS
Nokia’s N810 already had GPS support, but AGPS is oh-so-much better and a new app released in beta downloadable from the Nokia Beta Labs blog gives just that kind of awesome assisted supported to the N810. Whereas plain ‘ol GPS requires a satellite fix for positioning which at times requires a bit of a wait, assisted GPS uses WiFi hotspots and cell tower triangulation to quicken the process. This means a faster location fix and less waiting time when you need to know where you’re going.
Being a beta app there are a few downsides to the N810 AGPS support. Namely it requires an active internet connection to receive fresh data. This can be done via WiFi or Bluetooth, but check out your N810’s data plan to make sure you’re not paying up the wazoo for the added functionality. Oh, we can wait for the day’s or real unlimited data plans.
Two other important points. First of all you’ll need to have the latest OS2008 SW which you can find here, and when you first use the app you’ll need to manually point out your first location on the provided map.
