Pharos Drive GPS 250: High-End Navigation For A Low-End Price

Pharos Drive GPS 250The Pharos Drive GPS 250 is a high-end GPS system for a low-end price. At only $299, you’ll be hard pressed to find a personal navigator at a similar price with such an extensive list of features. The Pharos Drive GPS 250 features:

  • 480×272 pixel 4.3-inch widescreen display
  • Windows CE 4.2 OS
  • 266-MHz Freescale MX21 processor with 8MB of ROM and 64MB of SDRAM
  • Navteq maps of the US and Canada with one million POIs preloaded on a 1 MB SD card
  • an easy-to-use interface and main menu with all functionality coming from three options: Go, Map, and Settings
  • 2D north, 2D track up, or 3D track up map views
  • 1,200-mAh lithium-polymer battery, good for 5.7 hours
  • text-to-speech

Testing resulted in an impressive speed rating for the Pharos Drive GPS 250, calculating and mapping a 12 mile trip through Brooklyn, NY in 12 seconds and a 640 mile trip from New York to Ohio in 21 seconds. Route recalculation after a missed turn was also fairly quick.

The Pharos Drive GPS 250 is a marked improvement over previous Pharos GPS models, but the company’s navigators still don’t feature Bluetooth, media playback, or real-time traffic updates. The Pharos Drive GPS 250 is available now at Amazon.

Pharos Starts Pre-CES Buzz With Trips & Pics Announcement

Pharos Trips & Pics GPS functionality on your digital camera…wow! Pharos decided to start some pre-CES buzz yesterday by announcing Trips & Pics, a geo-logger that actually brings GPS to your digital camera. Trips & Pics include a Pharos iGPS-500 receiver and a pocket-size battery unit that’ll record details such as time, location, speed, and heading and allows you to define how often the receiver logs information, from every second to every 5 minutes. This data is then exportable to your PC where you can view your trip route on apps such as Goople Maps. Pharos Trips & Pics will be available later this month for $89.95.
