CES 2009 will likely be an entirely different showing than last year’s thanks to the ongoing economic recession. Here’s a quick comparison between last year and what we’ll likely see this year.
In 2008…
- products tended to be excessively sized and have unneeded, fancy features
- 141, 000 attendees
- 3, 000 exhibitors
- Las Vegas hotel rooms almost impossible to find
- showy, flashy exhibitions meant to catch attention and an emphasis on brand focus
In 2009…
- smaller, more connected, greener devices that are marketed as being worth the money spent
- 130, 000 attendees expected
- 2, 700 exhibitors expected
- plenty of Las Vegas hotel rooms still available
- companies will tend to show products that haven’t suffered as much from the recession due to reasonable price points. i.e., personal navigation devices, mobile phones, netbooks
- companies will focus on getting individual sales this year rather than just flexing muscles
- big focus on touchscreen devices
