A company called Sagem Orga has teamed up with BlueSky Positioning to bring the world’s first assisted GPS-enabled SIM card to the mobile mass market. The two companies have managed to fit a GPS receiver/antennae on a SIM card in order to enable applications with positioning requirements to run on even entry-level handsets.
A press release from BlueSky claims the AGPS SIM card can support location-based applications and games, but they also say its primary purpose will be for use by emergency services.
It’ll be interesting to see if anything comes of this development. Original equipment manufacturers are always looking to lighten their technological footprints these days, but the two companies are up against more powerful chipmakers such as Qualcomm that could not only replicate but improve this technology without a problem.
