DeLorme has partnered with Spot to released the PN-60w, the latest PN Series outdoor GPS handheld, which has the ability to send text messages from remote locations by leveraging the Spot satellite system. Not only can the PN-60w send text messages to email addresses and cellphone numbers, it can also update your Facebook and Twitter status. And we’re talking customizable messages as opposed to pre-packaged choices. All from the backcountry wilds outside of the range of cell towers. As for other details:

  • access to standard Spot features such as Tracking and SOS Emergency Assistance
  • improved battery performance due to a new ambient light sensor which controls the backlighting that illuminates the display
  • 3.5 GB of internal memory for storing maps, geocaches, waypoints, tracks and routes
  • a new interface with an icon-based menu system
  • a Profile page for viewing elevation data
  • the ability to read GPX data from SD cards
  • compatibility with a NetLink aerial imagery subscription
  • a wireless connection to the Spot Communicator (hence the “w”) and to other PN-60w devices (users will be able to see each others locations on a map within about 800 meters)
  • wireless exchange of waypoints, geocaches and tracks with other PN-60w users

The DeLorme PN-40w with Spot Satellite Communicator is slated for general availability in the spring of 2010. Amazon currently has it listed for pre-order DeLorme PN 60w GPS handheld updates your Facebook and Twitter status with a shipping date of May 1 and a price of $549.95.
