Driving while GPS’ing to go the way of chatting and texting: Banned

handongps Driving while GPSing to go the way of chatting and texting: BannedTexting and driving?  A big no-no.  Talking on the cellphone and driving?  Also a big no-no.  So a ban on playing with your GPS device and driving is probably coming sooner or later–starting with New Jersey.  L. Harvey Smith, a Democrat from Jersey City introduced a bill on June 8 that would only allow voice-activated programming on GPS devices while driving.  With newer Bluetooth-enabled devices this won’t be a big problem, but for those averse to Bluetooth and the higher GPS prices it brings, finger tapping the touchscreen would result in a fine of $100.

While plenty of people will oppose this, I don’t.  Being on the road with a distracted driver isn’t the best of situations and a law like this will likely save lives.  Would you oppose this?  Why?

  • I'm tired of banning specific things while driving. It's always someone's pet peeve, too. I believe the current statistics rank cell phones as the 4th or 5th most common accident-causing distraction well after things like passengers, music, radio and air conditioning adjustments, and food.

So, either leave reckless driving judgements up to traffic officers or start at the top of the list, not at the behavior that bugs you personally.
