One of the things I like most about EveryBlock, Chicago-based hyperlocal news platform, is that they aggregate government-provided information and use it in a way that’s highly usable for each locality’s residents. Much of this type of information is missing from traditional media sources. For instance, a new feature on EveryBlock Chicago provides information on all of the city’s bike racks, with mapped locations, and updates when every one of the 500 new bike racks installed annually in the city are installed. To some this might seem trivial, but in an economy that’s driving up gas prices a mile a minute, many of us are going to be turning to alternative transportation. And bikes are just so much easier to steal than cars!
