Find nearby Wi-Fi hotspots with WeFi

by Justin on January 24, 2009

wefi Find nearby Wi Fi hotspots with WeFiOut and about and need a quick reference for nearby Wi-Fi hotspots?  Try WeFi.  The service has a database of nearly 15 million hotspots around the world that’s completely free to access.  From your desktop anyway.

If you’re in the United States you can text 4WEFI (49334) and receive a list of nearby hotspots.  But in tests conducted by Mashable, the returned list took up to an hour to receive and it cost $0.50 plus standard text messaging charges.

There is free software downloadable from WeFi’s website that will automatically detect and record new Wi-Fi spots if you want to contribute to the project.  You can do it manually as well, or if your phone has GPS you should be able to detect hotspots automatically as well.
