Semiconductor maker Freescale is planning on adding to its low-power chip announced last month with chipsets for Google’s Android operating system. Expected by the second quarter of 2009, Freescale is developing the chips for Android-powered netbooks rather than smartphones and will involve partnering with wireless tech companies Wavecom and Option.
Aside from Google Android, Freescale will also support 3G-supporting operating systems from Phoenix Technologies and Xandros. The company which builds ARM-based processors typically used in cellphones, will be part of the initial roll out of ARM-based netbooks later this year which will compete with Intel’s Atom processor, but which Freescale says will bring the cost of its netbooks down to near $100.
Interestingly the company also headed to India after reports of the country’s $10 educational quasi-laptop and is now actively involved in whatever is going on over there.
