If you’re a driver of a larger vehicle, like an RV or semi, the folks at PCMag are indicating Garmin’s Mobile PC may be a great fit for you. If you have a laptop without integrated GPS, Garmin Mobile PC offers a bundled solution including a USB GPS 20x receiver and easy-to-install software on a DVD. If you already have a 20x USB or Bluetooth GPS receiver, you can just opt for the software which includes drivers for most popular receivers.
Despite the fact that you lose the touchscreen interface because Garmin Mobile PC is built for laptops, it still displays the typical nuvi screen but is able to fit all of the icons on one screen. This enables you to do pretty well anything with one-click–with either the mouse or shortcut keys–including navigation, and finding nearby gas stations, hotels, and airport flight times. You’ll need internet access for the latter three features though.
Amazingly, the PCMag reviewer found that intentionally missed routes were recalculated faster using Garmin Mobile PC on an older laptop than on a simultaneously run Garmin nuvi 760. If having a laptop in the front seat of your vehicle is a possibility, Garmin Mobile PC has one more major factor that would make it a smart purchase: the price. The hardware/software bundle retails for a suggested price of $99.99 while the software-only option lists at $59.99.
