If in-dash, GPS-powered computers are the future of mainstream vehicular navigation, then the new Ford Work Solutions package is the closest attempt I’ve seen at approaching a mainstream price.
For $1, 195, the aptly named In-Dash Computer features Garmin-powered GPS navigation, Sprint-provided wireless internet access, LogMeIn remote access to your home or office desktop, Bluetooth, and front-positioned USB and SD card slots.
Unfortunately, a relatively low price usually means there are some tradeoffs and the In-Dash Computer doesn’t happen to be an exception to the rule. It isn’t compatible with Ford Sync, so despite the SD card slot (for Garmin maps) you won’t be able to play music. And a fairly thick, button-rich bezel and center console mount result in a fairly small screen (6.5-inches diagonally) for certain tasks. Garmin Ford GPS navigation.
But for the price, the features offered by Ford don’t seem too bad for the mobile worker. The In-Dash Computer is available for Ford F-Series trucks, Ford E-Series Econoline vans, and Ford Transit Connect mini delivery vans.
