Ever find the navigation menus that are supposed to make portable GPS devices easy to use, um, less than intuitive? Garmin is one brand that doesn’t have this problem–that’s why nuvi devices don’t have an instruction manual in the box. But Laptopmag.com says that Garmin’s StreetPilot c550 is a “good choice for technophobes who worry that a GPS navigator will be too difficult” as well.
Garmin managed to fit large buttons onto the unit’s 3.5-inch display for major features, and if you’re looking for real-time traffic it gets even better. The StreetPilot c550 comes with three months of free traffic information–$59/year afterward–and the FM antenna is attached to the power cord eliminating wire clutter. And if it’s plugged in, it works.
The verdict? Laptopmag says that while c550 pulls in the same TMC traffic data as other FM devices, it doesn’t offer as many rerouting choices, nor does it allow you to see a full map with all of the surrounding trouble spots. In the end, the Garmin StreetPilot c550 is a great buy on sale, but at full price go for the TomTom GO 720, which sells for $50 less.
You can find the StreetPilot c550 at Amazon for $249.99 while the TomTom GO 720 is currently shipping for $159.99.
