As expected, Google added the world’s oceans to Google Earth today, announced during a conference at the California Academy of Science. Google Earth 5.0, as opposed to version 4.3, allows you to head all the way down to the seafloor and explore whatever it may offer in 3D. Google has added tons of data points including “videos and images of ocean life, details on the best surf spots, logs of real ocean expeditions, and much more,” according to The Official Google Earth Blog.
While Google Ocean has grabbed most of the press attention, Google Earth 5.0 has other new features too. Google has added historical imagery that, for instance, lets you move back and forth in time when viewing Silicon Valley. Touring enables you to create a fly-through tour by pressing a record button and moving from destination to destination. And 3D Mars leaves the Earth behind entirely and takes you on a 3D tour of Mars with all the latest high-res imagery and includes annotations alluding to space mission highlights, etc. Check out the video below to see some of the new features in action.
