Google Earth is one of the most popular free applications available for the iPhone at the moment, but if you’ve ever installed it on your desktop you’d be quite aware of its slow speed.  Thanks to the hard work of the Google Earth team, you can now get your hands on a browser plug-in for Mac OS X –also compatible with Safari and Firefox 3.  Now you’ll be able to enjoy the full functionality of Google Earth in your browser without having to launch a separate application.

The only real issue, if you want to call it that, is the plug-in’s size–a whopping 47 megabytes.  Google says the large size is due to both Intel and PPC plug-in binaries being packaged in.  But hey, better a slow download once than a slow moving application over and over again.  A Windows plug-in is also available, released at the end of May 2008.

The Mac plug-in can be downloaded from the Google Earth API webpage.
