It was way back in May 2008 that we first heard about Google’s intent to map the world’s oceans. Rumor now has it that February 2 will be the official unveiling of the new Google Ocean service at a California Academy of Sciences event. Google’s Eric Schmidt and Marissa Meyer are expected to show up for the event and Al Gore is scheduled to speak. Chief Scientist of the National Oceanographic and Atmospheric Administration, Sylvia Earle, is also expected to attend.
Now this could all be an extremely strange coincidence, but given that the Academy has an aquarium and a load of fish tanks too, I’m betting on a Google Ocean announcement.
