I haven’t mention iGasUp, a gas-finding iPhone application, here before but with a bit of an upgrade today it’s definitely now worth highlighting. Developed by the Oil Price Information Service (OPIS), the self-proclaimed “world’s most comprehensive source for petroleum pricing and news information”, iGasUp allows you to to find the 10 cheapest gas stations or 10 nearest gas stations with one tap of the iPhone’s touchscreen. Finding the 10 nearest stations is the new upgrade, after OPIS realized that finding the cheapest gas station when you absolutely need gas now, isn’t the most usable feature. The company has also said that customers using the iGasUp application save up to 15 cents per gallon on gas, despite falling gas prices.
iGasUp also allows you to search by zip code and in a future update will allow you to expand your search by city.
The Apple Blog has taken the time to compare iGasUp with other iPhone gas-finding applications GasBag, and Where’s Gas Buddy and found iGasUp to offer the most comprehensive database of information although its use of maps was a bit glitchy and it did offer occasional bad data (as do other gas-finding apps). Nonetheless, with a price tag of $2.99 at the iTunes app store, iGasUp might be worth a try. You’ll definitely cover the purchase price in gas savings fairly quickly.
