Adding location-based info to digital photos, called geotagging, is all the rage these days. Microsoft came up with an idea about 3 months ago to develop a software program that would add photographers all kinds of GPS-based tools to add location-based metadata to their photos and already they have released Pro Photo Tools. The program, according to Ars Technica, integrates with Virtual Earth for text based location searches, interactive placement of photographs, visualization of track routes, and 2D/3D map browsing.
Pro Photo Tools users can either drag pictures onto their location on Virtual Earth or take NMEA, GPX, and KML formats from a GPS device and place the photos on the track route. Both ways place GPS-info onto the picture files which can then be used to generate location info. Users can search for photos by location or vice versa and both addresses and coordinates can be used. For the time being though, Microsoft’s Pro Photo Tools is only compatible with Windows XP and Windows Vista in their US English, 32-bit editions.
