Some newer Honda’s in Japan feature in-dash GPS units with overlays of high crime areas, allowing drivers to navigate around potential trouble spots. The crime-aware GPS, manufactured by Mitsubishi, was first made public way back at CEATEC in 2006 and rates Japanese districts by level of risk, but according to car manufacturers won’t be available in the US anytime soon.
Even Honda’s destined for the US won’t features crime-aware navigational systems, not just because American Honda’s use Alpine navigators, but because manufacturers are scared of further marginalizing Blacks, Hispanics, and other minorities that tend to populate areas the overlays would deter the driver from.
Who would have thought navigation would become so political?
