Navizon MobiFindr For iPhone, Blackberry: Find Your Phone Or Your Friends With A Simple SMS

Navizon, a peer-to-peer wireless positioning system, that uses a patented three prong system to pinpoint a location-WiFi hotspots, cell tower triangulation, and GPS-was released in an updated version last month and as part of that release came a new service called MobiFindr.  At the time MobiFindr was released specifically for the iPhone and can locate the position of a mobile phone simply by sending an SMS to it.  Unlike Navizon’s Buddy Finder which constantly updates the user’s location, MobiFindr only works when it receives an SMS with an attached password of your choosing.  What’s this mean to you?  It means that the new service has absolutely no effect on the battery life or performance of your mobile phone.

It’s a great application for locating a lost phone, or finding friends and family members in the great urban abyss of the continental United States.  A free version derives location based on cell tower location giving a margin of error of 1500 meters.  Not the best.  Navizon’s premium version adds in WiFi hotspots for greater accuracy; both can be downloaded from Navizon’s website.

Yesterday the company announced that MobiFindr is now available for the Blackberry, and is totally free.  Check out the demonstration vid above and look for the application to be compatible with Windows Mobile and S60 phones in the near future.
