I gotta tell you, batteries really piss me off! Inconveniently dying at all the wrong times, not to mention putting the boots to your wallet with ridiculously expensive prices, I think I have reason to be pissed. But MTI Micro has come up with an embeddable prototype methanol fuel cell specifically for GPS handhelds, the Mobion, that provides 3 times the energy of 4 AA batteries, enough for 60 hours of continuous use according to the company and well beyond the lifespan of typical batteries. And all’s you have to do to recharge these battery is fill it with methanol. The Mobion GPS prototype can also be used to charge other mobile devices such as cellphones via a USB port. MTI Micro feels that the Mobion is a perfect alternative to batteries for GPS and other mobile devices given some of the more energy-sapping features debuting these days such as large full-color screens.
