GPS Lithium-Ion Battery Life Could Increase 5 Times

Lithium-ion battery manufacturer QuantumSphere has developed a new electrode structure that could increase battery life up to five times.  Right now anode capacity is only 10% of the battery’s weight, but QuantumSphere has increased the capacity to 50% thereby increasing the battery’s surface area.  A larger surface area means more nano lithium particles, the key factor in extending the battery life.

QuantumSphere has set a goal of extending single-charge battery lives to 12 hours for laptops and 4 days for mobile phones.  We’re guessing that would mean a typical PND using this type of battery would last an entire day, allowing extended geocaching outings and extensive weekend urban exploration.  Sounds like fun, eh.

This isn’t just all theory and snake oil either.  QuantumSphere has filed a patent for the technology and raised $20 million to make it a reality.
