Apple

iPhone Apps

We can’t wait to see what app developers have done with the 3G iPhone’s AGPS capabilities when Apple’s iPhone App Store finally launches today, just a day before the second-generation iPhone receives its official launch tomorrow.  It looks like Apple already has a database of more than 1700 web apps available, but as of this article’s writing no App Store.

When it does launch later today, the New York Time reports that more than 500 apps will be available initially, 25% of those completely free.  90% of the commercial applications will cost $9.99 or less and the third wave of the first round of apps will consist mainly of games.  Hopefully some of those will be location-based.

Apple says that the role of the App Store isn’t to make money directly, but to sell more iPhones.  In fact, developers will receive 70% of revenues from sales.  But by opening access for developers to write software for the new iPhone, Apple could possibly dominate the mobile market one day.  However, Google’s Android OS could be a viable competitor when it launches later this year and Palm, RIM, Microsoft, Symbian, and Nokia already have a big jump on Apple with tens of thousands active developers each.  We’re sure Apple will catch up quickly.
