Second-Generation Asus Eee PC’s Rumored To Have GPS

Asus Second-Generation Eee PCIt’s rumored that Asustek’s second-generation Eee PC lineup will include GPS functionality, possibly eliminating the need for Eee PC owners to purchase a portable navigation system.  There is a DIY hack that adds GPS to first-gen Eee PC’s, but this will be the first time we’ll see GPS actually integrated into the notebook platform.  The 8.9-inch rumored-touchscreen Eee PC will feature Intel’s low-cost notebook platform, low-end memory capacity will be upgraded to 1 GB from 512 MB, and SSD capacity will be upgraded from  8-12 GB from 4-8 GB.

The second-generation Eee PC is expected to be released in May or June although a recent fire at an LG Chem plant has resulted in a battery shortage that could throw a kink in Asustek’s plans.  The shortage is expected to be resolved by sometime in the 2nd quarter, so if the release is delayed, it won’t be by much.

The Asus Eee PC is expected to be priced at US$500.
