According to LinuxDevices.com, certain Garmin PND’s run Linux.
A quick look at the Nuvi 8xx source code indicates that the devices run a 2.6.17.7 Linux kernel on a Marvell “Monahans” processor, likely either the Marvell PXA-300 or -310. The kernel seems configured to use 64MB of RAM, and to be patched with Steven Rostedt’s real-time patches.
This info was obtained by taking a look at the source code for Garmin’s nuvi 8xx and 5xxx PND’s, just made available by the company. The source code also suggests that the devices are powered by GNOME Mobile and GeoClue, a Linux-based modular geoinformation system for developing location-aware applications. This implementation of GeoClue is apparently the first in a commercially available GPS navigator.
