TomTom ONE And TomTom XL Get Updated Models

TomTom ONETomTom will release the latest TomTom ONE and TomTom ONE XL models in the UK sometime this month.  Completely redesigned and sporting all kinds of new and improved features, the next-generation of the world’s best selling car navigation units have been built with optimal ease-of-use in mind.  The TomTom ONE will feature a 3.5-inch LCD touchscreen, while the XL will boast a 4.3-inch screen.  The models will both come with an EasyPort mount that allows the GPS unit to be mechanically locked to the windshield.  It can easily be removed by a simple twist, folded up and placed out of view for added security.

Both models also feature an enhanced, larger speaker system so audible navigation isn’t compromised.  Voice guidance will be easily heard in any in-car environment.   Users will also have access to tons of map updates per month, provided by other user’s via the online MapShare community as well as a map guarantee that will allow the downloading of the latest maps from TomTom’s website should they be upgraded in the first 30 days after purchase.

TomTom users will have access to roadside assistance info wherever they go as well as access to emergency features.  Via the “Help Me!” menu, available on both models, users have access to emergency numbers, directions to the nearest hospitals, service instructions, car maintenance advice, and first aid instructions.   Live traffic is an optional feature and if a Traffic model is chosen, live info is received via the RDS-TMC antenna included in the box.

[...] TomTom’s XL Traffic Europe GPS receiver is an entry level device with a nicely sized 4.3-inch TFT LCD widescreen with anti-glare properties and a sharp picture thanks to its 480 x 272 pixels, WQVGA, and 64k colors.  Easy to setup and with TomTom’s usual highly usable interface, the TomTom XL Europe comes with complete maps of Europe provided by TeleAtlas and connects to your PC via USB for map updates and MapShare for crowdsourced map corrections.  Plenty of search options are available if you’re looking for a specific location running the gamut from latitude and longitude coordinates to a plain ol’ postcode and you’ll be able to access a TMC service for traffic updates via an external dongle.  So is the TomTom XL Europe worth the money spent?  With a quick response time and an effective design, it’s the perfect GPS device for someone looking for basic features.  You won’t get some of TomTom’s advanced features such as IQ Routes and Advanced Land Guidance, but hey, it is an entry level device and will only set you back about £169.99 in the UK or if you’re looking for the equivalent model in the US with North American maps, expect to pay around $200.
