HP pulls Linux off netbooks in the United Kingdom, but makes beautiful Ubuntu MIE available as download

HP mini netbook users in the United States are pretty comfortable with most Linux-based operating systems, but not so in the United Kingdom.

While the company offers SuSE Linux or its “Mobile Internet Experience” custom interface based on Ubuntu, for both the new Mini 2140 and Mini 1000 in the United States, HP is pulling all forms of Linux in the UK.  Across the pond in the Kingdom, HP will ship the Mini 2140 with either Windows XP or Windows Vista, and the Mini 1000 (or Compaq 700) will have XP pre-loaded.

UK netbook buyers will still be able to download the Ubuntu MIE interface, and judging by its beautiful aesthetics, it’ll be worth it.  But, by then you’ve already paid Microsoft what it wanted.  If you do want a HP netbook in the UK and prefer Linux, you can always grab the 2133 while it’s still around, but if you’ve grown accustomed to the Atom, you won’t be impressed with its VIA C7-M processor.
