If you use any mobile device, whether a portable navigation device or mobile phone that uses Tele Atlas maps, you’d recognize the branded icons used on the maps to visually represent points of interest. These icons actually come from the company’s Brand Icon Program. South Korean car manufacturer Hyundai is the latest brand to join the program, enabling Tele Atlas maps users to see any Hyundai dealership or service center worldwide on the map interface.
In a world that’s becoming more and more reliant on location-aware mobile devices, I think any major brand not taking advantage of opportunities like the Brand Icon program is missing out on a potential source of revenue. Obviously quite a few bigger brands are thinking the same thing. Brands such as Starbucks, McDonald’s and Walmart are just a few of the brands already signed to the Brand Icon program.
