Infomedia, the development company behind the wildly popular iFart Mobile iPhone application, has brought a new level of transparency to the sales numbers required to succeed in Apple’s app store. Previously the company released sales and rankings information for iFart, which does nothing more than make fart noises, as it moved from #70 in Entertainment to #4 overall over 9 days. On December 22 iFart moved into the top selling spot and Infomedia has released the numbers required for such an achievement:
Dec. 21–#2 overall–9760 units
Dec. 22–#1 overall–13274 units
Developers only receive 70 percent of revenues, so at $0.99 iFart Mobile earned $9198 on December 22. Not a bad day’s work. At the time of writing, iFart Mobile has fallen to #27 overall while the $9.99 Sim City has taken over the top-selling spot. I think it’s likely that sales numbers for number one applications vary quite a bit, but I’d be very interested in seeing Sim City’s numbers. At a full $9 more the iFart, we’re finally seeing more expensive applications succeed. But how many units is Sim City selling a day?

Update: Someone from iFart Mobile left a comment saying that the #27 spot was bogus. I went back to the app store to make sure I wasn’t mistaken. iFart Mobile is still #2 in Entertainment but when I rechecked iFart Mobile was sitting at number #18 overall. Seems I wasn’t mistaken.
