Intel has confirmed that its Intel Atom Z280 chip is shipping; not a big surprise considering the new processor powers the ASUS Eee PC 1000HE which is up for preorder already. At a clock cycle of 1.66 GHz, the Atom Z280 is a touch faster than its 1.6 GHz Z270 predecessor and has a faster 667 MHz front side bus that connects the processor to the system components. The GN40 chipset is able to decode 720p high-definition video as well, something the Z270 couldn’t do. Nvidia’s Ion platform trumps the Z280 in this category, with the ability to decode 1080p HD video. Intel didn’t reveal the pricing for the Z280.
