The UK’s Transport for London is testing a system called Intelligent Speed Adaptation that will stop cars from exceeding the speed limit. The system is currently being tested in thousands of taxis, buses and government vehicles and utilizes satellite tracking and digital road maps to detect the speed limit on a given road. Once the speed limit is confirmed the system prevents drivers from exceeded the limit.
This won’t be a compulsory device. In fact drivers have the ability to switch to an advisory mode that works much like audible speed limit warnings pre-installed on many GPS systems. They will be available to commercial organizations after the six-month trial is complete and to individual consumers next year.
While the majority of us probably wouldn’t want one of these, London authorities say it may appeal to drivers with previous speed infractions that are perilously close to having their licenses suspended.
