The infamous iPhone Dev-Team has a working unlock for the 3G iPhone that will be released this New Year’s Eve, December 31. Codenamed ‘yellowsn0w’, the unlock will be packaged in an easy-to-use and attractive skin and allow iPhone owners to use SIM cards in their phones other than AT&T’s. There’s a few caveats here though. The unlock requires a jailbroken iPhone and a baseband of 2.11.07 or earlier. Additionally, if you’ve already upgraded to OS X 10.5.6 you may have problems using DFU Mode. Since you need this to jailbreak the iPhone, previously unbroken iPhone’s that have upgraded may not unlock. The Dev-Team doesn’t think this is any kind of competitive counter-measure by Apple. Rather they think the update introduced a kernel bug and have come up with a few try-at-your-own-risk fixes which you can find at the Dev-Team website.
