Elephants Are Badasses Too
A bull elephant named Kimani that lives in the Ol Pejeta Conservancy in Kenya has such a penchant for raiding farm crops outside the private game reserve that he’s been outfitted by a hacked together GSM/GPS-tracking collar.
In partnership with NGO Save The Elephants, the conservancy can track Kimani using either Google Earth or Google Maps, and even set up a geofence so they’re alerted via SMS over GSM anytime he steps outside his boundaries-sure fire evidence he’s up to no good.
Park rangers have started to outfit other mammalian residents of the conservancy with the GPS collar, not only to track their movements but to prevent poaching-or in Kimani’s case, being shot by a pissed off farmer.
