bb openbar LBS city guide Buzzd rolls out Blackberry applicationBuzzd, a location-based social network and city guide, has finally launched an application for the Blackberry today.

The free application, available from recently launched Blackberry App World, recommends restaurants, night spots, and other points of interest based on a users location as derived from GPS and cell tower triangulation.  The company says that it now has 500, 000 cell towers in its database and location is accurate 95 percent of the time.

Buzzd has spent the last year building its database of restaurants and shops, according to Bits, culminating in more than 2 million hotspots in its place database.  Much of the content comes from partners such as MyOpenBar, FlavorPill and TimeOut.

In the future the Blackberry application will allow users to add pictures to recommended spots.  For instance, if you like a certain dish at a restaurant you can take a photo of it and it’ll be added to the data available for that restaurant.  Buzzd also plans to enable users to add full-blown reviews and suggest places to be added to the database, much like competitor Yelp.

Launched in 2007, Buzzd received $3.2 million last year from the Blackberry Partners Fund, which invests in mobile startups.  It’s also partnered with Virgin Mobile and MetroPCS to offer content through each carriers WAP deck.

In fact, the Blackberry application is the first time Buzzd hasn’t been offered through WAP or the desktop internet, so this will surely help it gain some traction.  In the near future Buzzd will also debut an application for the iPhone , but it seems the company chose to target Blackberry first because it felt the App World is currently underserved.
