LG Electronics is launching an application store for mobile phones tomorrow, following in the footsteps of Apple, Android, Nokia, Research In Motion and others.
Although the initial focus will be on the Asian market, LG hopes to have a worldwide launch for its “LG Application Store” by the end of 2009. It’ll actually launch with 1, 400 applications including 100 free programs in 15 languages. While that’s not a bad number of apps to launch with, LG doesn’t have a fancy SDK or the marketing savvy to attract the number of developers other platforms have. In fact, LG says that the number of apps is only expected to increase to 2, 000 by the end of the year.
Singapore, Malaysia and Australia will all have access to the LG Application Store tomorrow, after which it’ll move to Europe and South America. The company doesn’t have any plans currently to move into North America due to the overwhelming popularity of the iPhone, Blackberry and as of late, the Palm Pre.
