In an interesting development today, LG has said that it’ll use the new Windows Mobile 6.5 operating system on 50 of its smartphone models. Previously LG only used Windows Mobile on one handset, but the move show confidence on its part in Microsoft’s mobile developments. It also sheds light on Microsoft’s intention to be a player in the mobile software industry. At the end of 2008 Microsoft only had 13.9 percent of the global mobile OS market, trailing Research in Motion’s 16.5 percent and Symbian’s 52.4 percent. With Microsoft’s somewhat more user friendly version 6.5 OS, and its new Marketplace application store, hopefully this partnership with LG will bring it back from the dead in the world of mobile.
