It’s now clear that our environmental impact could put humanity’s existence in jeopardy in the relatively near future. As more and more of us look to do our part in cleaning up our acts, sustainable business practices are beginning to catch on. Local food networks, farmers markets and other such creations that attempt to keep food production close to home are one of those sustainable business concepts gaining popularity.
An iPhone and iPod Touch app called Locavore can assist you in your local food search. The iPhone app deduces your location by GPS positioning and then directs you to all the nearby farmers markets, while at the same time offering chart-organized non-profit and government data alluding to what foods are in-season in your general area. Where I’m located, in Winnipeg, Canada, this app would be ideal for someone looking for a local food market. The trend isn’t really mainstream enough yet that I can easily find weekend farmers markets and the like here. Maybe I’d be more inclined to actual shop at one if I could easily find them.
The only downside to Locavore is that the in-season information isn’t correlated with each market. So while you may be able to find out that strawberries are in season, you won’t be able to find out which market stocks them without making a phone call. Hopefully the developer will fix this in the future.
Locavore is available from the iTunes store for $2.99.
