A new version of location-based social network Loopt is in the works, according to Techcrunch. Currently one of the most popular LBS apps for
the iPhone, Loopt has a focus on social connections in its current version. But this could soon change.
According to MG Siegler, Loopt 2.0 will focus on Places. This is corroborated by a screenshot he obtained. As you can see in the picture on the right, the bottom toolbar now has a Places button which is missing from the current version.
Presumably Loopt is adding a emphasis on places in order to create new ways of monetizing the application, whether it be through mobile coupons or some other form of advertising. Or the company could have something completely different up its sleeve, who knows. Notable is the fact that new LBS network Foursquare is build upon such a model. It not only has an emphasis on places, but also offers virtual incentives for users such as point systems for different real-world social achievements. So far its been quite popular.
Loopt 2.0 is said to be coming out sometime this summer.
