Mobile social network Loopt is now available as a free download for Android, though only in the United States for now. Users of AT&T, T-Mobile, Verizon, MetroPCS, Boost, and Sprint currently all have access to the popular network, though of course you’ll only be able to download the Android app to T-Mobile’s G1. However it is available on over 100 different handsets on all networks including Apple’s 3G iPhone and Research in Motion’s Blackberry phones. One great thing about Android’s Loopt app is background location updates so even when you’re not using the app on the G1 you’ll be alerted when your friends are nearby. This lack of background processing on the iPhone has been a major problem for apps like Loopt because users aren’t updated unless the application is running all the time.
